In early December 2010, Oaklawn broke ground on a new 43,540 square-foot surgical suite project. The new surgical wing will be located in front of the main entrance to Oaklawn and will result in an enlarged, barrier-free, canopy-covered entrance. The addition will be two stories high and feature four new state-of-the-art operating rooms with space to add two more should future needs call for it. The four new surgery rooms will measure 625 square feet each and provide private rooms for pre-op and recovery. The new rooms are roughly 40% larger than the three original surgery rooms that operated near capacity for the past two years. The new surgical wing is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2012. The old front entrance was closed the end of January and is expected to be reopened by November. All non-emergency patients and visitors should enter through the Wright Medical Building entrance off Mansion Street, across from the parking structure. Free valet parking is available at that entrance.
The new surgical wing represents a significant development for Oaklawn and our overall community. Families will benefit from better, more comprehensive care. Over 20 new jobs are expected to result from the increased surgical capacity and Oaklawn will be better positioned to provide a higher level of care well into the future.
In addition to the new operating and recovery rooms, the project will enlarge waiting areas and provide private family consult rooms. Improved office and clinical space in the psych department and additional storage space are also part of the project.
