Oaklawn Nurses Earn Professional Ladder Awards
Dan Stulberg

Sondra Fettes and Sara Birch are the Program Coordinators playing major leadership roles in Oaklawn's journey to reach Magnet Status.

Oaklawn Hospital celebrated National Nurses Week (5/06-5/12) in a big way, recently, by hosting nearly 200 nursing professionals, and their guests, to an elegant evening dinner and recognition program. The May 9 event, held at Marshall Activity Center, included numerous speakers, awards, and a touching power point presentation.

The highlight of the evening was the presenting of over $233,000 in Professional Ladder Awards to fifty-eight members of Oaklawn’s nursing staff. These cash awards were given for significant achievements over the past year in the areas of advanced education, national certifications, volunteer service, and performance improvement activities.
58 Nurses received bonuses for achievements in advanced education, certification, volunteer service and performance improvement.

The Professional Ladder Awards were developed by the nursing staff as part of Oaklawn’s Magnet Recognition journey. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) grants “Magnet Recognition” status to healthcare organizations that recognize and reward excellence in clinical nursing practice. At present, only about five percent of the nation’s hospitals have met the criteria for receiving this prestigious status. Under the leadership of Chief Nursing Officer, Kristin Sims, Oaklawn kicked off their journey to attain Magnet Status in 2005, with the goal to be awarded the certification in 2009.

Featured speaker and CEO, Rob Covert, expressed his great respect for the nursing profession and the tremendous pride he gains from receiving so many compliments about the care that Oaklawn nurses provide. His remarks also included 13 reasons why the Board and Administrative Team are so supportive of this ambitious goal that the nursing staff has undertaken.

2008 Oaklawn Student Art on Display
Dan Stulberg

Oaklawn Auxiliary members, Ellen Thornton and Dar Neidlinger register student artists for the Bank of America savings bonds drawing.

Last Friday, May 9, the Oaklawn Auxiliary hosted its 21st Annual Student Spring Art Show in the lobby of Bank of America (formerly LaSalle Bank). An estimated crowd of over 250 students and adults filed through rows of display racks that exhibited over 270 framed pieces of student art. Auxiliary co-president, Ellen Thornton, introduced local Bank of America president, Scott Bigelow, who welcomed the large crowd and expressed how much the Bank enjoyed being involved with the show. He then held a drawing for three $200 U.S. Savings bonds that went to three students whose art was on display and who were lucky enough to have their names drawn.
MHS senior, Emily Parker, was awarded the Hayes/Freese-Oaklawn Hospital Student Art Scholarship. Parker is being congratulated by her art teacher, Barbara Bonte.

Oaklawn Hospital Development Director, Keith Crowell, was then introduced to officially accept the student art, which, after a two-week display at the bank, will be taken to the hospital to be displayed throughout both Oaklawn and the adjacent Wright Medical Building. Crowell thanked both the Auxiliary, for their organization and planning of the show, as well as Marshall Public School art teachers for their involvement in getting each piece of art entered in the event. Lastly, of course, Crowell thanked all the student artists whose eye-pleasing works of art not only brighten the halls of the hospital, but also the lives of the patients, staff, and visitors who get to see it each day. The pieces will hang on Oaklawn’s walls until next year when new pieces are submitted and this year’s works are returned to each artist.

The climax of the program was the presentation of the annual Hayes/Freese – Oaklawn Hospital Scholarship. The scholarship is named after the late Muriel Hayes, and Bobbie Freese, both of whom were involved in the origination of the Art Show and who have annually contribute to the scholarship fund. The $1000 scholarship is given to a graduating artist who plans to pursue a degree either in art, or a healthcare field. This year’s winner was Emily Parker.
