Excitement growing as Oaklawn’s New Surgery Center Nears Completion

[Marshall, MI]  Plans to host a February 2 public open house for the new Oaklawn Hospital Surgery Center are well underway, and excitement on staff, particularly in the Surgery Department is growing daily. “There’s been a lot of anticipation for this,”said Surgical Nurse Director Todd Mulvaine, “and watching the rooms come to life in these final weeks has made everyone very eager to begin working in the new surgical suite.”

Included in this $25 million project are four new state-of-the-art operating rooms (ORs), 18 private pre-op/recovery rooms, nursing stations and immediate recovery area, medical staff lounge & locker rooms, sterilization and supply rooms.

Oaklawn currently has three ORs, but increased demand for surgical time caused the hospital to seek approval to expand its department. Granger Construction Company, the general contractor, began digging the foundation the first week of December2010.

The entire construction project is adding 43,540 square feet to the hospital. In addition to the new surgical suite, the project included improved office and clinical space in the psych unit, and will enlarge the surgery waiting areas and provide private family consult rooms. A new lobby and barrier-free, canopy-covered front entrance are also nearing completion.

Marketing and Public Relations Director Dan Stulberg explained that the front entrance and lobby probably won’t open until late March and that the open house is strictly to showcase the Surgery Center. “The Surgery Center is very close to completion,” said Stulberg, “with the first surgery scheduled for Monday, February 6. As soon as the open house is over, we’ll do a final sterilization and after that you’ll have to be rolled in on a gurney or part of the surgical team in order to gain access to the ORs, but we wanted the public to get a chance to see the outstanding addition that we’ve made to their hospital. We’re about to open one of the finest surgical suites in the state.”
