The 31st annual Oaklawn Hospital Hospitality Classic will be held this year on Saturday, May 18th. This Oaklawn sponsored event encourages families and, individuals of all ages, to foster healthy lifestyles through the enjoyment of running or walking. The Hospitality Classic has been reviewed for the activity content and has been endorsed by the governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports. (This does not reflect endorsement of the sponsoring organization or the products used.)
Oaklawn Hospitality Classic events include a 5K and 10K run, a one-mile fun run and a non-competitive 5K walk. Routes take runners and walkers through historic downtown Marshall. Last year's event attracted runners from across the region, and had more than 1150 participants.
Awards presented to overall, master (over age 40) and top three male/female in each age group in the 5K and 10K events. Children participating in the Mile Fun Run will receive a commemorative medal and a certificate from McDonald's of Marshall.
The OLIC-Fitness Club is offering their Five weeks to a 5K walking/running group. The group will meet at 6:00pm Mondays and Wednesdays, April 15-May 15. Routes are mapped out weekly and are led by a degreed fitness specialist. All levels are welcome, as well as leashed pets and strollers. The Oaklawn Hospitality Classic and 100 Lap/5K Club for area schools.
Each year Oaklawn Hospital offers area schools the opportunity to encourage fitness to their students. We call this program the 100 Lap Club-for elementary students (up to grade 5) and the 5K Club for higher grades.
Grade level goals are set equating 1/5 of a mile as 1 lap. Kindergartners complete 25 laps (5 miles); first graders 50 laps (10 miles); second graders 75 laps (15 miles); third grade and up complete 100 laps (20 miles) By completing the grade level equivalent of 100 laps the student will improve their cardiovascular endurance, feel good about accomplishing their goal, and hopefully develop healthy habits intended to last a lifetime. In 2012, over 700 area students participated in the 100 Lap/5K Club.
Students achieving their required grade level goal, and turning in their log sheets become official members of either the 100 Lap Club or the 5K Club. Prior to turning in their log students will choose between receiving a 100 Lap club member T-shirt or getting a $5.00 discount off the normal Hospitality Classic registration fee.
The 100 Lap/5K Club is subsidized through Hospitality Classic registration fees, corporate sponsorships, and community donations.
For more information on the 100 Lap or 5K Club please contact Theresa at (269) 789-8134.
